Getting Over It is best known for being a rage-inducing game that is said to purposely make you fail to make you mad. However, I believe it is a philosophical game meant to bring out the potential and determination in an individual. Although Getting Over It doesn’t have a story, it does have a deep meaning. The gameplay of Getting Over It is simple; the player controls a man using a sledgehammer to climb to the top without falling. The main trick is learning the game’s physics, such as specific objects that will make you slide off or how far you can launch yourself in a swing. The game is trial and error in learning to overcome a sticky situation.
Getting Over It is philosophical because the player learns how to overcome or get over difficult situations we all go through in our lives. This game is not for the weak-willed or those who dislike failure. However, the game could change one’s perspective to know it’s okay to fail and that everything can be overcome if you keep trying. Some people experience that change when playing, but most will beat the game and walk away without thinking of its true intentions. Some will not touch the game whatsoever because of the fear of failure. Getting Over It can also be interpreted as a metaphor for everything. The journey of getting to the top of the game can be a metaphor for starting a life with someone or going through with a career. The open interpretation is a remarkable thing the game has that some people will see.
Getting Over It has decent graphics. An intriguing game detail is that you can simplify the graphics, similar to the Nintendo 64. It’s great for people who don’t have high-end computers that can run complex graphics. Throughout the game, you’ll be narrated by the creator on different topics that generally teach you to take life slow and not let anything stop you from what you want to do. Getting Over It is a deep game that everyone should play. It will be difficult for some, but they might finish the game with a new positive mindset and perspective on life.
It looks like I’m not the only one who thinks so. Check out this article to see someone else’s thoughts: https://www.gameskinny.com/culture/theres-philosophy-in-getting-over-it-we-swear/
