Undertale is a 2015 2D role-playing video game by Toby Fox involving a child who falls into the Underground, an isolated world separated by a magic barrier. It is a magical, exciting adventure you can replay without getting bored. The story is simple but good, with interesting people you meet along your journey. Every character in the game is uniquely different from one another in design and personality, including the general enemies. Undertale doesn’t have a super wide variety of enemies, but the levels are long enough to be fully enjoyable. A fun thing about Undertale is that you interact with each boss, getting to know them before fighting, which creates emotion toward the character. When doing a pacifist route, that emotion builds as you befriend everyone in the game, which brings to a climactic emotional ending with the final boss.
Undertale’s art is a simple, beautiful landscape. Games nowadays tend to try and be hyperrealistic, even in pixel art, which tends to lack captivating you in the world. However, the Undertale creator went for a simple pixel art look, which is pleasant to look at and admire. In some instances, Undertale will have more detail on their pixel art in significant scenes. For example, the art is more detailed for an up-close look at a character in a shop.
The difficulty of Undertale is balanced perfectly for each route being pacifist, neutral, and genocide. For someone who hasn’t played games much, some parts of Undertale might be challenging, like a couple of boss fights in the genocide route. However, the gameplay is easy to get the hang of, and for a person to beat a boss, all they need is to practice and memorize some of the boss’ battle patterns. A great detail relating to each route in Undertale is how each will have something completely different along the way. In the pacifist route, you meet every character and have wholesome and funny interactions with the main characters. Even though Undertale is a cute game, it still has a darker side from the genocide route. The biggest change is genocide, which you must see for yourself! There are other changes throughout the game, like mini characters evacuating areas, making them empty and barren compared to alternate routes. Undertale is one of my favorite games that everyone should try.
